travel : rental cars general
Rental cars and gas are expensive in Hawaii. Gas prices there will make the Bay Area seem affordable. :) Since 1) most of the parking garages in Waikiki have very tight corners and stalls and 2) the average speed on H1 Freeway is 55 mph (I swear!), if you want to save money and don't mind a smaller car, I recommend it as I feel they are easier to drive around Waikiki and downtown Honolulu. Parking in Waikiki is expensive (if your hotel even has it), you can expect to pay around $20/day.
If you are in town only for a night or two and plan to stay only in Waikiki and downtown Honolulu, you probably won't need a car (although I would try to find a carpool buddy for the ride to the ceremony). However, a lot of tourist spots are beyond Waikiki and downtown Honolulu (like the North Shore), so I think a car is necessary if you plan to do a decent amount of sightseeing or plan to stay for more than a couple days. TheBus (www.TheBus.org) is excellent within town, but if you go to more rural/suburban destinations, you may have a 1 hour wait between pickups. By the way, why do mainlanders find "TheBus" name so funny?? :)
Finally, while on the topic of cars, please note that rental car break-ins are common in beach parking lots. Please don't leave anything valuable in your car (even out of sight), try to leave it at home or somewhere safe in your hotel.
